Recreating History with a Reciprocating Compressor

Flying aircraft

From manufacturing to agriculture, medical to automotive, compressed air systems are vital for the smooth operation of businesses in so many industries. But few people know that air compressors are used in unusual and unique industries, too!

Theme parks and tourist attractions often rely on air compressor systems such as reciprocating compressors to keep rides and simulations safe and operational.

From hydraulic launch systems on certain theme park rides, to powering brakes and safety features on roller coasters, air compressor systems are often working behind the scenes.

Recreating history

Want to know what it was like to have lived through the bombing of Darwin Harbour in World War II?

Thanks to the innovative use of a Pilot Air compressed air system, the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Darwin Tourist Facility allows guests to experience the harrowing day that Japanese aircraft unleashed their fury on Darwin.

Darwin Tourist Facility

The RFDS tourist facility was opened in 2016 and features two iconic Northern Territory stories in one location.

One of the two major attractions features a recreation of the 1942 bombing of Darwin, when enemy aircraft brought destruction to the city. The exhibit uses the latest in virtual reality technology to simulate the experiences and stories of that fateful day.

The Pilot Air reciprocating compressor

Pilot Air’s compressed air system is used in conjunction with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system. A large screen creates a window looking out over the harbour and imagery is projected on stage to simulate the air raid and the dropping of a bomb.

As the bomb hits the water on the projected image, the Pilot Air compressed air system delivers a shockwave and ground movement resembling what it may have been like during the ordeal.

Ensuring the best guest experience

To ensure guests have the best possible experience whilst visiting the facility, it is paramount that the compressed air system works reliably. Any malfunction in the air compressor would severely hinder the effects of the exhibit and lead to guest dissatisfaction.

The team at Delta Electrics in Darwin, one of Pilot Air’s national network of experienced service providers, regularly services the Pilot Air K25 Reciprocating Air Compressor at the RFDS facility, ensuring its reliability.

Pilot Air is proud of the fact that one of its air compressors is being used in such a unique manner, helping visitors learn about and experience an important historical event in both Darwin and Australia’s history.
